Pipe Saddle Template and Pipe Coping Template Guide — How to Cope Pipe
Wrap-around templates for scribing pipe saddles (Coping Wings) and 90° corner joins (Corner Wings). Mark it, take it off, cut it, fit it.
Quick Fixes — Read This Before Returning
- “The cope doesn’t sit tight.” Coping Wings are for joining two pipes of the same size — the branch and the run must match. Otherwise the wing is usually a different size to the pipe. Measure the pipe’s outside diameter with calipers or a Pipe Wrap and check it against the size table below.
- “The profile is on the wrong side.” Check the reference line on the wing is lined up with the end of the pipe and the wing is pulled snug with no gap at the overlap.
- “It won’t stay put.” Pull it snug and hold the overlap with a small clamp, magnet or tape.
- “It went soft.” Heat. Remove the wing before cutting or welding.
Which Wing Do I Have?
- Coping Wing (CW-…) — scribes a saddle so one pipe sits into the side of another. Six angles on every wing: 22.5°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 67.5° and 90°. Use for T-joints and angled branches.
- Corner Wing (CN-…) — scribes 90° corner joins: two-way (L), three-way and four-way. Use for frames, cubes, handrail corners and balustrade.
- Coping Wing Sets — CW-S1 (1", 1¼", 1½", 2") and CW-S2 (2½", 3", 3½", 4").
Sizing — Get This Right First
Wings must match the pipe they wrap. Pipe is sold by a nominal size that is not its actual outside diameter, which causes most fit problems. Measure the actual OD and use this table.

How the wings are named: the eight smaller Coping Wings (1" to 4") are named by nominal pipe size (ID), and each one has its actual OD printed on it — for example the 1" wing reads “ID = 1", OD = 1.32" (33.4mm)”. The larger Coping Wings (5⅝" to 10") and all Corner Wings are named by outside diameter. If in doubt, measure the OD and match it to the table.
Same-size joins only: the branch pipe and the run pipe must be the same size. The wing profile is drawn for two pipes of equal OD.

How To Use a Coping Wing
- Square-cut the end of the branch pipe (the one being coped). Use a Pipe Wrap to mark it.
- Wrap the Coping Wing around the branch pipe with the reference line on the pipe end. Pull it snug and hold the overlap.
- Find the angle you need (22.5° to 90°) and scribe along that profile edge all the way round with soapstone, a scribe or a paint marker.
- Remove the wing.
- Cut to the line with a grinder, band saw or notcher. Take it a little proud, test-fit, and dress to the line.
How To Use a Corner Wing
- Square-cut the pipe end.
- Wrap the Corner Wing around the pipe, reference line on the end.
- Pick the profile — two-way, three-way or four-way — and scribe along it.
- Remove the wing, cut, test-fit with the mating pieces, then tack.
Heat
The wings are 0.4mm clear polycarbonate. They handle workshop warmth, not flame, sparks or arc. Mark, remove, then cut and weld.
Looking After Your Wings
- Wipe with isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits. No acetone, thinners or brake cleaner.
- Store flat in a folder or roll loosely. Do not leave on a hot bench or ute dashboard.
